Responding to Limmy's Show - Water

Welcome back!!

This week I will be responding to Mallory's lead blog post in which she focused on a Scottish sketch comedy show called "Limmy's Show".  The particular clip Mallory chose is entitled "Water" and, in it, Limmy questions why anyone would choose to purchase a bottle of water from the store when water just flows straight out of the tap for free!  If you haven't already, watch the clip down below.

Well, what did you think?

I mean, I thought it was pretty funny!

Mallory touched briefly on this in her post but, like with the strong southern drawl noted in my post of Jeanne Robertson a few weeks ago, the presence of Limmy's intensely strong Scottish accent adds a lot of humor to the clip for me - an American.

It's amazing how much influence something as simple as someone's own natural accent can have on our perception of the things that they are saying and the stories that they are telling.

And then, what about the people at the end of the clip?

Image result for drinking from a bowlThey yelled "cut", as though the clip was over.  They made it seem as though it was all an act (funny, right?).  They made it seem as though they were *gasp* actually shocked by what Limmy was saying (!!) - as though they thought he was joking or pretending!

And then they start drinking water out of a bowl because - SHOCKER - it tastes just like the water they buy in the bottles from the store!  Who'd have guessed it?

Mallory does a great job in her lead blog post of explaining how the clip utilizes the incongruity theory of comedy.  She explains how incongruous it is that people are so amazed and surprised at the concept of tap water that they resort to drinking out of bowls just to get some quickly when, to the average person in our society, tap water is a completely normal concept!

I suppose it does do a good job of pointing out to us how foolish we can sometimes be to buy a water bottle at the store when we could just fill up a reusable one, though!  This was a great post and clip that I thoroughly enjoyed.  Thanks Mallory!

Until next time,

  1. It is true that this is another great example of regional comedy, which can be either funnier or weirder (or both) depending on how you relate to it. It seems that the accents made this funnier for you, no?

  2. The accents definitely added to this clip! Without the accents I think this video wouldn't have been as humorous.
